I was able to go back in time.
I was watching the concert of Backstreet Boys Homecoming in Orlando (1998). And then it hit me. I was stunned. True, it is better to be awed unexpectedly than building high expectations then get disappointed later on.
They were playful on stage. I was expecting some suave dance steps. But I remembered, this was the 90s. No harlem shakes yet. No hip-hop routines on the streets. No shake-your-ass-like-we’re-having-sex steps. So I got to focus on their songs. They are boyband alright. Their songs are expected to be cute, expectedly making the girls swoon. What was unexpected was when they dropped the choreography and sang a capella. Man these guys can sing! And boy do they sing well.
So I tried to remember their songs. They must have at least one or two songs that I liked. I was wrong. I stand corrected. I still like them until now. Not the dance songs, you dummy! I really find them so cheesy. But they have few good ones like All I Have to Give, a capella version. The live version of From This Moment On with Shania Twain. The remake of No One Else Comes Close. The sweet As Long As You Love Me and the innocent Anywhere For You. Their self-written That’s What She Said. They also did great in Drowning and More Than That.
There’s also a part of the show wherein they replaced their band and they played their own song Quit Playing Games. Sooo cheesy…but these guys can deliver. They actually did. Brian can play the guitar. Nick played the drums. Kevin plays keyboards/piano. Aj played bass and Howie on the lead guitar.
I finally understood why on one of the N’Sync interview, they mentioned that these guys (BSB) are their idols. And that they can never do what the BSB can. They proved themselves wrong later on but that’s a different story.
Whatever happened to the boys? AJ is an ex-alcoholic. Heard he’s 2.5yrs sober now. Brian is a dad. Nick is ex-beau of Paris (haha). What else…hmm…they are back. What?! Are you insane? Making a comeback? Yufyuf. They are releasing a new album this month. I’m eager to see what the Boys can offer now that they’re all grown up. When more than pretty face, they can really sing (I’m still awed hehehe). After all, that’s what’s important in their industry.

BSB, you earned my respect. I give you 10 eggnogs!
PS: They actually danced the basketball steps that Jessica Alba popularized in Honey movie (2003). Also the wazzup-wazzup move that started to become popular after being used in They Got Served movie (2004). Not bad…. Not bad at all.
PS2: I crushed on AJ. The bad boy in the group. What’s new. *rolleyes*
PS3: I’d walk halfway around the world for just one kiss from you…
